Kabir Aksharaa : Paintings And Installations Exhibition By Smt. Gayatri Mehta at Jehangir Art Gallery (February 6 -12, 2018)
It was indeed an artist’s daring step to explore the themes like “Kabir Dohas”. In an era of extreme modernism, the artist attempts to take the viewer on to a soul searching journey through her work.
Kabira’s verses talk of social, spiritual, mystical expressions of truths which he experienced across his path to his ultimate revelation and self-realization. They are contradicting to each other but lead the common people to search within instead of getting lost outside into the fallacy of this world.
The moment you enter the showcase area, you feel like “artworks” are turning into “playful chords” chanting those heart touching lines of Saint Kabir. The lines written ages back have still have strong relevance today.
A series of 18 artworks amazingly narrates the today’s Social and Cultural turmoil. How blindly we are racing… without knowing the cost of our uncontrolled inner desire. The moment you start exploring her artworks, you sense an awakening, an enlightenment…giving you clues about seeking balances in life. With her strokes she has given life to Saint Kabir’s couplets without disturbing their essence. It was not an easy task. She has extensively read and studied Kabir for more than a year.
In the words of artist “Kabir has been provoking the rebel inside me, to put forth my own vision through his verses in a different way. I had to accept the challenge to move onto an untrodden path of my own imaginations, to render Kabir’s wisdom in a dynamic way with the skills to be explored by me. I am breaking myself free from all bindings to set forth a new me in my creative vision, while delving into the poetry of Kabir. I have tried to express the Kabir envisaged by me in metaphorical, symbolic and surreal paintings and installations.”.
