Surabhi Gulwelkar (5th -11th March 2019), Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai
SURABHI GULWELKAR is a young an emerging artist. She got an opportunity to study at Florence Academy of Arts, Italy as a part of scholarship when she was a student at Sir J.J. School of Arts.
This Artival Journey from Mumbai suburbs to Art and Fashion inspiration capital of the world-Italy has transformed her completely. In her solo exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, she showcased somewhat around nine artworks. According to the artist, this exhibition is like a “Honeycomb” for her that reflects depositary of ideas and visualization during her journey from Mumbai to Italy and back to her native place.
Her artworks were broadly divided into two parts; firstly, when she was a art student at J J School of Arts, where she was inspired by the mundane things around the campus including nature and secondly, when she travelled to Italy where, she was highly inspired by clean and clear water of Mediterranean Italian seas.
What makes her artworks unique is her style of highlighting a subject in fewer strokes by just capturing the impression of the visuals rather than going in more elaborate details. Another unique thing was the magical played of light and shadow, giving a glimpse of 18th century Impressionism. No doubt the artist has her own pictorial language that advocate realism rather than absolute imitation. She only used knife with few bold strokes and cleverly blending merging techniques to add a melodrama in a single frame.
