At The Gold Dynasty group exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Pune-based senior artist Mr. Vijay Kumar Pandav presents a body of work that transforms spiritual contemplation into luminous abstraction. Executed in acrylic on canvas, his paintings are less about depicting meditation and more about evoking the invisible energies that meditation seeks to awaken. Rooted in metaphysical inquiry, Pandav’s visual language draws from the idea that the human being is merely a microcosmic reflection of the vast and unknowable Brahmand — the cosmic universe suspended in primordial darkness.
A trained alumnus of the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art and a former professional associated with Tata Motors for nearly three decades, Mr. Pandav carries into his artistic practice a rare combination of discipline, introspection, and patience. Though he has been painting independently for the last thirteen years, his works possess the maturity of someone who has spent decades silently observing the relationship between material reality and inner consciousness.
What distinguishes Mr. Pandav’s paintings is their extraordinary handling of texture and light. At first glance, the canvases appear minimal and meditative; however, upon closer engagement, the surfaces reveal painstakingly layered translucent textures composed of countless delicate swirls and stippled marks. These near-microscopic applications create an optical vibration, allowing light to appear as though it is emerging from within the canvas rather than resting upon it. The technique itself becomes metaphorical — spiritual awakening, according to the artist, is never instantaneous but unfolds gradually through layered experience and inner refinement.
One of the most compelling works in the series employs sweeping arcs of fiery orange and deep blue that intersect across the canvas like planetary orbits. Tiny human silhouettes positioned at the margins appear dwarfed by the immensity of cosmic movement. The painting powerfully communicates the human search for balance within the overwhelming scale of the universe. The curved bands resemble energetic pathways, suggesting that consciousness travels through invisible cosmic currents toward illumination.
Another striking composition introduces a radiant lotus-like form emerging from a glowing horizon of amber and crimson. The ascending sequence of luminous spheres placed along the central axis evokes the gradual elevation of spiritual awareness, reminiscent of chakra activation or transcendental ascent. Here, Mr. Pandav avoids literal symbolism; instead, he constructs an atmosphere of sacred stillness where geometry, colour, and repetition become vehicles of contemplation.
In a vertically aligned green-toned canvas, concentric fields of light radiate outward from a seated meditative figure positioned at the base of the composition. A glowing vertical beam traverses the entire surface, visually connecting the earthly body to a higher cosmic source. The painting transforms meditation into a journey of energetic alignment, where the boundaries between the self and the universe begin to dissolve. The expanding circular formations function almost like sound waves or frequencies, reinforcing the artist’s belief in unseen positive energies permeating existence.
Mr. Pandav’s palette plays a crucial psychological role throughout the series. Fiery oranges, solar yellows, deep cosmic blues, and meditative greens are orchestrated with remarkable sensitivity, generating both warmth and transcendence. Despite the abstraction, the emotional accessibility of the works remains immediate. The viewer is not required to intellectually decode the imagery; rather, the paintings operate experientially, inviting prolonged silence and inward reflection.
In an era dominated by visual excess and conceptual noise, Mr. Vijay Kumar Pandav’s works stand apart for their sincerity and spiritual restraint. His paintings do not seek spectacle; they seek stillness. Through layered translucency, cosmic symbolism, and meditative geometry, the artist creates immersive visual spaces where the viewer momentarily encounters both the vast darkness of the universe and the quiet illumination hidden within oneself.
