Spine & Sport Physical Therapy has been awarded a five-year term contract by the City of Sacramento to provide firefighters, police, and other city employees with early access to evidence-based physical therapy

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Oct. 23, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — On September 29, 2023, the City of Sacramento awarded a Request for Proposal (RFP: P2308137002) to Spine & Sport Physical Therapy as the only contracted direct physical therapy provider for employees with workers’ compensation. The services include providing evidence-based (i.e., early, and appropriate) physical therapy care that is measurement-driven, high-value, and active based, along with advanced outcome measurement and educational programs. Importantly, these services allow for continuity of care across prevention through acute and chronic treatment. The scientific literature has shown that early and appropriate access to physical therapy using similar approaches can significantly enhance recovery, lower disability, and medical costs, and reduce opioid use. For the employees of the City of Sacramento, this approach is projected to augment return to work, job performance, function, and quality of life.

“Early and appropriate physical therapy intervention will provide the City of Sacramento the opportunity to enhance safety, health, resilience, and productivity of its workforce,” said Brett Raasch, PT, ATC, CEO of Spine & Sport Physical Therapy.

The City of Sacramento employs a wide range of individuals, such as first responders (firefighters, police officers), as well as various manual labor, health, and administrative occupations. Many of these employees are at high risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders. The City of Sacramento will have priority triage for its employees to schedule physical therapy within 48 hours. Telehealth will be deployed to help to facilitate early entrance of patients into physical therapy programs.

“Spine & Sport will utilize the industrial athlete model, involving active care, measurement for early recovery, and to avoid re-injury,” said Joe L. Verna, DC, QME, Clinical Outcomes Officer of Spine & Sport Physical Therapy, and President of US Spine & Sport Foundation. This model is combined with evidence-based, psychologically-informed, and patient-centered physical therapy to enhance recovery. Its staff undergoes extensive training in managing people with work-related injuries as well as first responder and tactical industrial athletes. The training focuses on improving work preparedness and the quality of life of these employees.

Spine & Sport Physical Therapy will collect and measure a wide variety of outcomes data for positive and negative trends. Analysis will be completed by John M. Mayer, DC, PhD, of US Spine & Sport Foundation, a non-profit 501.c.3 research organization. These analyses will be used to educate staff, improve systems, and report findings to the City of Sacramento. Along with clinical outcomes (e.g., patient-reported outcomes, performance tests), the analysis will include other outcomes, such as return to work and patient satisfaction.
